First Workshop on How to Pray by Fr. Paul
Tuesday Oct 09, 2018
Tuesday Oct 09, 2018
This is an hour long workshop Fr. Paul gave on how to pray by meditating and journaling on the Gospels. It was the beginning session of our Monthly workshop, or labratory, where each month, people will share their experiences of prayer and ask questions. We will learn from others, and Fr. Paul will continue to share different ways to pray, and theory about prayer, especially from our Catholic Doctors of the Chruch, St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila. If you wish to join our Monthly "How to Pray" workshop, it might be helpful to listen to this recording of our first meeting. (But you do not have too! All are welcome.)

God has designed marriage as our primary means to sanctification. Created in the Image and Likeness of God, who is Love, we express that image in which we are created in the lifelong, faithful, covenant of married life, that is open to new life. Not everyone is called to marriage here on earth. Some marry, some remain single, and some become preists, religious sisters and brothers. However, all are first called to Marriage with Jesus our bridegroom. That love relationship is also open to new life, begetting new children of God, that is disciples of Jesus, and being so filled with God's love that it overflows from God, through us, to others.

This Gospel passages mentions the devil, sin and the power of Jesus. It emphesizes the need to avoid sin, and the damage it does to us and others. It talks about the need to be charitable to others and build up the human community. And it talks about receiving our reward. It covers a lot, and so does this homily which is a short summary of The fall of the angels and humans, redemption in Christ, what is sin and how to fight it, what we're called to do in addition to simply avoiding sin, and our eternal reward. If that is not enough, it draws out the lesson of what all this theology matters for us today.

How Jesus instructs us to work for Peace by Service. (Mk 9:30-37) (25 OT)

Jesus tells us what true greatness is, work for all to be great. Jesus shows us the Servant Leader model, and the basis of our Catholic Social Teaching; the dignity of the human person. We become a great (Nation, Church, Society, Family, Person) by seeking not to make ourselves great compared with (and at the expense of) other, but we seek to make all great/first. But Jesus would never get elected, because this way is hard, it requires sacrifice and patience.

Why Didn't Jesus Just Tell Us He is God? (Mk 8:27-35) (24 OT)
Sunday Sep 16, 2018
Sunday Sep 16, 2018
In the Gospel for the 24th Sunday of Ordinary time, Jesus asks us "Who Do You Say I AM?" We all must answer this question, not only with words, but with our life. Many claim that in the Synoptic Gospels Jesus never claims to be God. This is not true. This homily, with help from a book by Brant Pitre called "The Case For Jesus", we can see Jesus does claim to be God. But why didn't he tell us more directly? Because we humans do not understand the ways of God, and Jesus had to first teach us what the Kindom of God really is about. How are you answering this important question: "Who Am I?"

How to LISTEN to God (Mk 7:31-37) (23 OT)
Tuesday Sep 11, 2018
Tuesday Sep 11, 2018
23rd Sunday Ordinary Time Homily on Mark 7:31-37, Jesus heals a deaf and mute man. This healing really happened, but is also symbolic. It shows that Jesus is recreating humanity, whom wounded by original sin, could no longer hear God, and because of that we do not speak clearly God's will into being. This homily gives three suggestions of how to LISTEN to God (Look at the facts, Imagine possibilities, Seek advice beyond yourself, Turn inwards, Expect God's help, and Name your decision).
