Sunday Nov 17, 2019
Many Christian teachings are hard to understand. They are revealed by God, and we can spend a lifetime probing their richness and significance. One of these teachings that is hard to understand is the promised coming of Christ at the end of time, to establish the fullness of the Kingdom. This seems like a science fiction story to modern ears, and something that is fearful. But in reality it is a profound Mercy of God, and something that is meant to strengthen us to persevere filled with Hope, Peace, and Love. Knowing that the victory of Christ over sin and death has already occurred, and will be finally established at the end, helps us to work for that coming with a healthy detachment, knowing the fight is not ours but God's, it is made present by our witness to it.

God created the entire Universe; how Magnificent it is, how powerful God is! But his greatest wonder is that he shows us Mercy, we who have sinned. Sometimes we pray asking God for things for ourselves and others. Prayer is also meant to transform us into holiness, it sanctifies us, and makes us more Christlike. This homily suggests four ways of praying, all requiring self honesty (usually painful), to surrender to the Transforming Power of God.

Sometimes God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers. With a little help from Garth Brooks ("Unanswered Prayers"), Fr. Paul tries to explain Jesus's encouragement in today's Gospel passage, to continue to pray even when it seems like our Prayers are not answered. Praying for "Thy Kingdom Come..." is one of our most important tasks Jesus asks us to do. We the Church, unite throughout the world to raise this prayer 24/7.
